Instant Bar Review: Pegu Club

Went out for a couple drinks to the Pegu Club last night. It's an homage to the original Pegu Club in Rangoon, which was big in the days of the British Empire, and where various cocktails originated or were popularized; and indeed, the place is all about the cocktail. About the best I have tasted in the city, though the Brandy Library is up there too, and none of this Put Flavored Vodka In A Cocktail Glass With Something Sickly-Sweet And Call It A Stupidtini, and the decor is lovely. But not, not, not cheap.

They have small foods (also delicious, also very not cheap) but no full kitchen. They do have beer and wine but, seriously, that would be like going to Artisanal and getting the fish.

Would definitely go again, particularly if I can flutter my eyelashes and get a boy to do the buying.

I would second the endorsement of Pegu. I've been there only once, after hours when it was just about closing time, but the bartender was terrific and the drinks were good (my friend was surprised that they could make a rare drink for him he'd been unable to get most other places).

A funny coincidence; I was all set to grab a drink there with a friend after work last night, except that I was feeling too sick to go! Perhaps we would have run into one another! Well, next time (tomorrow, actually).

Heh! That would've been funny. (Though honestly, it was so dark and, by 7pm at least, so busy that you might've walked right by us and not taken notice.)
