Is this Verizon DSL?
It looks like it might be a wide-area thing ... here at home (in Jersey City) we're seeing 1500 ms ping times to the local nameserver.

Yeah. And it seemed likely it's an area thing, as it's the hop from our bridge to the Verizon gateway that appears to be lost in a time warp, but I note their "DSL Network Status" page doesn't say a thing about it.
