Who the fuck builds these things?

Now the OTHER file server, the one that does everything that is not mail, has fallen and will not get up. I, of course, am on first pager. BECAUSE I KNOW A GODDAM THING ABOUT NETAPPS.

I know that you're supposed to have a service contract and phone-home monitoring that'll have them onsite fixing it for you before you knew yourself that it was degraded or busted.

Might we be discovering the joy that is not having a service contract?

Yeah, the contract is a large part of the point if this sort of hardware. Without it you might as well just buy a Thumper.

(Which is not a particularly bad route and something we've been agitating for ever since they were first released. 24TB raw for AU$50k, yes please!)

As I understand it, the role in question has been filled by a NetApp since before ZFS was conceived; the hardware might have been a bit more pointful then.
