Further Frailties of the Flesh; or, Perhaps I Do Too Much

Yesterday I took the day off and, with massive amounts of help from [livejournal.com profile] caelfinn and Husband-of-[livejournal.com profile] sedai for which I am eternally grateful, moved a bunch of STUF over to [livejournal.com profile] nedlnthred's (if I think I'll need it in the next N months) and [livejournal.com profile] sweh's (if I don't). Most of it was not so very bad, but my dresser is about 5x heavier than I thought, particularly when moving up Beth's narrow, U-turning, 1880s-era staircase. Yerg.

However, the job was completed, and we rested, ate, and refreshed ourselves before I came back into town to attend the first iteration of this year's Midsummer Night Swing with [livejournal.com profile] elibalin. This was fun, but with many "but"s. The dance floor was insanely crowded, so that one could barely move, and so we kept getting stepped on and kicked and what not. This is bad enough by itself, but I was also feeling extremely out-of-my-element, having never swing-danced before, and uncoordinated as I am, I was pretty nervous and high-strung about the whole thing. Also, I wore very wrong shoes: I selected for "slidey soles for dance floor", but they are not long-term comfortable at all, and the dance floor was not very slidey anyways, so I would have done better to gone for comfort instead. Finally, I would like to express my disapprobation at the bunch of people who were standing on the dance floor, not dancing, in the middle of the stage, just to listen to the music. NOT A CONCERT, JERKS. Anyways: after while, I was feeling tired, and my leg and knee and feet were aching, and I was starting to get a headache, so we packed it in early with an intent to come better prepared for our next attempt. This proved wise, because by the time I got on the train home, I felt like my head was clamped in a vise with extra spikes stuck through my eyeballs, interspersed with flashes of nausea. Would this be a migraine? Whether or no, it was really unpleasant and I'd like to not have any more of that--but I don't know what caused it so I don't know how to avoid it. Bah. Got home, took Vitamin I, went to bed with a damp cloth over my eyes. (Thankfully, I seem fine today, if exhausted.)

Sorry to hear the dancing didn't go so well. I do agree that you now know what to expect for next time. Maybe the headache was dehydration?

I didn't *think* so. I had a "venti" size cup of water while waiting for Eli to get out of work, and I drank a bottle of water while we were dancing.

Though I was failing to live up to the Burning Man motto, so perhaps it was, at that.

I've been paying careful attention, lately, to factors that seem to be involved in my headaches. Here are some:

Standing or sitting a lot on unforgiving surfaces (concrete especially)
Dehydration (and I don't have to feel thirsty, but I notice the next day when I drink a ton of water, the pain lessons considerably, so that seems like A Hint.)
Week (especially couple days) before period
Muscle strain in back, neck, shoulders from (my culprits)slumping (often due to overtiredness), carrying heavy bags (esp. with laptop)
Eating too much sugar or drinking too much red wine seem to be related, too.

YMMV

NOT A CONCERT, JERKS.

But, then, at a concert where some of the audience is doing something not entirely unlike dancing, those who aren't might be well advised to flee the area of those who are. Depending on what sort of concert.

(Which reminds me that I still haven't posted a report on the night I lost my camera.)

Nausea with that level of head pain generally equals migraine. Light sensitivity is another especially delightful symptom. Thank God I very rarely get them, but when I do, Excedrine Migraine is lovely. Hormones seem to be the culprit for me most of the time.

It certainly sounds like a migraine to me. I can usually tell when I've got one coming on (tendrils of pain in the back of my head, sometimes with light sensitivity), and if nausea has not yet set in, a large dose of vitamin I with a cup of coffee can usually ward it off, or at least knock it down some. I get them infrequently enough (maybe once a year) that I have not been able to identify triggers. Well, other than being pregnant with K (had them every day for a month).

Migraines almost always have one major hint: the pain is one sided. Left or right. It can switch on different attacks. If this is true you can probably be diagnosed pretty readily if your doctor is competent or you keep pushing the left/right thing. If not, you'll probably never convince a doctor.

There are *much* more effective meds than Vitamin I for migraines. No aspersions against Vitamin I intended, long live Vitamin I, hallowed be thy name.
