Last night, in the midst of the post-(very-late-)game bull session, I suddenly realized my wallet wasn't in my back pocket. Panic!! Tore the house apart, nothing. Realized I might not have even had it on the train, as I remember thinking "gosh, they haven't checked my pass yet" fairly well into the ride. So that was my credit cards, my ATM card, my driver's license, insurance card, registration cards for both cars (and though Steve has a spare for Womble {the Saturn}, we only had one for Lurch {the Taurus} and I carried it), a few misc. discount cards for B&N and whatnot, and, wait for the joyous kicker, my Social Security card. No, I don't ordinarily carry this around with me; but the NJ DMV web site indicated I'd need it to get Lurch inspected, which the event proved I did not, but I'd forgotten to take it out. Amidst my preparations for hara-kiri, Steve made me calm down and go to bed, pointing out that things would not seem quite so horrid in the morning. Deeply annoying, yes, but not end-of-the-world.

Got up, called NJ Transit Lost and Found, they said "nothing turned in but try calling back later". Sigh. Began the work of cancelling the cards and researching what pile of nonsense I'd require to get all the ID stuff back. (Let me take this moment to rant about that. What's the normal way to lose your license et al.? Losing your wallet. Which is going to lose all the rest of your normal forms of ID. So it DOESN'T BLOODY HELP for each of them to require each other to get a replacement!) But then, O joy and rapture unforseen, Hoboken reports back that someone had turned it in. Huzzah!

I can't shake the instinct that this is pure karma, from being a good pooky and Doing the Right Thing in little dumb everyday ways (like telling dim cashiers when they're undercharging me). Maybe so, maybe no. But I feel it very strongly.
