Brian and I intend to go whitewater rafting this Sunday, the 11th. If you're interested, please to comment and/or email me with your interest, how many bodies you bring with, and whether you have your own transport to a point some 80 min. west of here. Soon is better than late, as we'd like to make a reservation.

(This is not June's Doing Stuff[tm]. It's just a stuff that is being done, as it were.)

That sounds fun. Not counting transportation, can you provide a rough estimate of what the cost might be? (I have friends who might be interested but are more financially constrained)

Can we bring paintball guns and have running battles? :D

It is, alas, uncheap: $50 a head for a seat on the boat. (This doesn't include wet suit or any of that, but I'm not thinking we should need wetsuits in June.)

What I said above, with the $50 and stuff.

I like the paintball idea, but I bet they'll be all whiney and safety-conscious. Water pistols, on the other hand--!

Yeah, whoopsie. I thought that the initial anonymous comment somehow didn't take.

I've never been whitewater rafting before. Wetsuits aside, what else would we need to bring? Anything? Swim trunks, of course.

I haven't either. *cough* But Mister Internet advises the following:
* Swim suit or the equivalent, yeah
* Shoes that protect the feet and don't mind getting soggy (Brian says aqua socks and the like are good)
* Sunblock
* Sunglasses etc.--with a strap
* Warm change of clothes you leave in the car

I don't know what the food situation is, whether you pull over for lunch or what. I reckon on bringing a thermos with something hot, just in case there's a chill, at the least.

Well, I'm compulsively over-prepared for all occasions, so I say...

I'd bring a hat or brim, and the best waterproof sunblock used to be bullfrog -- maybe it still is. I sunburn wildly, so I usually wear a T shirt and Biker shorts over a swim suit, to prevent sunburn on shoulders and the tops of knees and thighs. I also have rafting shorts with pockets that snap. You probably won't want your bare thighs directly on the raft (If you're straddling the side as opposed to being inside). Tori is completely correct about wanting a strap on your sunglases. You might also want to make some plan for things that come in the boat with you -- like a water bottle or any valuables, like a car key. (Don't bring any valuables if you have a choice. Cash dries out. Cell phones don't.) If you do bring things, you want them tied on to either you or the raft. If you take an unexpected dip, the last thing you have time to worry about is whether your possesions will be lost or wet. They make small plastic containers on a strap that you could tie on under your life jacket. They are theoretically waterproof, but I also use a ziplock bag inside. (I'll look for mine if you want to borrow it.) Hmmm... a waterproof watch would be handy if you happened to have one, or maybe a disposable waterproof camera. You basically want to be prepared to travel light, if that makes any sense.

All the information is great! Thanks!

Unfortunately I think now that I can't make it after all. :( Thanks, tho. Next time. Where are you going? Do they have a website? I might organize a trip myself later in the summer.

I would love to, but I'm displaced by time and space ;)

It's, erm, hum, Pocono Whitewater (http://www.poconowhitewater.com) I think. Though we are also looking at trying some other places.
