How the sodding hell am I supposed to make a mix without MP3s to push around? I am happy to legitimately purchase a song but only if I confirm that I really need it here and do not talk to me about your garbage proprietary formats because iTunes made me nucking futs.

Yep. I've bought several songs from online music sites only to find that they won't play on my Mac or some other bullshit. It is easier to try to download it illegally.
