It certainly sounds like a migraine to me. I can usually tell when I've got one coming on (tendrils of pain in the back of my head, sometimes with light sensitivity), and if nausea has not yet set in, a large dose of vitamin I with a cup of coffee can usually ward it off, or at least knock it down some. I get them infrequently enough (maybe once a year) that I have not been able to identify triggers. Well, other than being pregnant with K (had them every day for a month).
