I took El Scuzz up to the vet. The very nice, somewhat incongruous doctor (think "Northern Exposure", except in the ghetto instead of Alaska) said that at least the bladder is empty--so that means no blockages, which lead to All Kinds of Bad Things--but on the down side, that means he can't get a urine sample to see if there are, e.g., uric crystals building up. Best guess is a UTI, so the fuzzbutt has gotten a whopping antibiotic shot, and an oral antibiotic to be given 2x daily. This somewhat curtails my weekend options, but I think I can make shift.

Also, I have mo' better flea remedies. PSA: Hartz Plus is apparently an inferior product that doesn't pack as much punch as Frontline or some of the others.

I should like to get some cleaning done today, but it's one of those unpleasantly lowering, humid sort of days where nothing ever dries and nothing feels clean after you've cleaned it. [livejournal.com profile] nedlnthred told me I ought to just relax and take it easy for a change, but there's just so much to do...

Glad to hear your kitty is doing OK.

My cat had a similar problem about a year ago — unable to urinate, though he was straining to do so. He did in fact have a buildup of uric acid crystals.

I'd been feeding him nothing but dry food at the time. My vet insisted I switch to wet food -- and not just any wet food, but a prescription brand that would supposedly help to break up any crystals in his system.

Hope this helps...

The OTC flea treatments are nowhere near as good or as safe as the vet-prescribed ones. I've heard horror stories out the wazoo.

You don't actually have to have a script to get Frontline or Advantage here; Petsmart and other large chain pet stores sell them...but they are still pretty pricey at around 45 bucks for medium dog strength.
While Frontline and Advantage do make your pets into walking flea-bombs, you might want to get some flea powder for carpets and upholstery. Zodiac makes a good one. You sprinkle, let sit, and then vacuum it up. It's also important to get rid of the vacuum contents immediately, as those damn larvae seem to hatch inside the bag otherwise, and you can find yourself back at square one.
