Finally saw the US tour dates for Judas Priest. They're playing Jones Beach on July 14th, and Jersey on July 16th--the latter being closer and a Friday, that seems the obvious choice. Who else is coming? (The one thing I don't know is when tickets are going on sale.)

We actually have known about Queens of the Stone Age for a number of years--Steve got some demo-ish CD of them, I think from Meteor City back in the day. We listened to it, said "eh, not bad", and continued the search for something to take up Kyuss's banner. Now, some of the discarding may have been because they Just Weren't Kyuss, but nothing on that CD leapt out and grabbed me the way "No One Knows" did on first listen.

I played the album for the first time through last week while painting[1], and though I wasn't paying full attention, it left a strong favorable impression. So I copied it to minidisc overnight and listened to it on the way in this morning, and was completely blown away. Every other song I thought, "No! Wait! This is my favorite song on the album!"

Let this stand as a lesson to all the swarms of children who think they're currently putting out music: You can be heavy without Cookie Monster vocals, and you can be melodic without sounding like whiny brats. Go thou and do likewise.

[1] I can't listen to stretches of unfamiliar music when I'm driving, or when I'm sewing. It makes me crazy. But I happily do when painting. Odd.

Funny... i've noticed that the best way to become acquainted with a new CD is to listen to it while i'm driving. It must go straight to the music library in my head.

It's possible that the great sound system in the missus's Passat helps, though.

I have to listen to familiar things while driving, or else I get irritated out of my happy driving place. One unfamiliar song here and there is okay, like what one might get on the radio, but more than that and I start to twitch.

This phenomenon occurs without regard to stereo quality, I should add.
