That reminds me of the time I built Firefox 0.9 for byzantium. It could run the little profile manager thing, and the first-time-user dialogs where it asks about importing settings and stuff. But when the time came to open an actual browser window, it would calmly exit.
What OS, exactly? The Linux Firefox stopped working on my FreeBSD box when 0.8 came out (won't run at all) and i'm not sure why. Of course, i've been meaning to upgrade that box to 5-STABLE one of these days... so, not a big deal.
Very strange. Are you using a release or a nightly build? I do run into occasional quirkiness (weird exit errors sometimes), but nothing as bad as you mention.
Also, get the Session Saver extension so you won't lose any progress if your browser crashes.
Happened with 0.9, just downloaded 0.9.2 today, did same thing; I assume it's the release, as I just followed the Download Now, Pathetic Mortal! large link on the mozilla site.
Session saver, yes, in theory, but if it crashes this often I will be way too annoyed to use the browser at all.
Try the the latest trunk nightly build (http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-trunk/FirefoxSetup.exe). That's what i've been constantly using, although i haven't been upgrading as often lately.
been using 0.8 since it came out (using it now to post this) on both windows and linux. what a/v stuff do you have installed (is it doing HTTP scanning?)
It's using McAffee "Virus Scan Enterprise", which Steve's work requires for any computer he might connect from. But I misdoubt that could be it, as the same software is of course on his machine, and Firefox loves him just fine.
You know, that "load two or three pages then crash" thing sounds damn familiar for some reason. I presume you've blown away both the Firefox and profile directories and started over, yeah?
