What confuses the matter further is that the article isn't entirely correct. There's the Town Of Hempstead, which is Very Big, as advertised, but there's also the village of Hempstead (which is inside the Town Of Hempstead), which is only about 35,000 people, and likely what the kid's shirt was referencing.

Heh. I love how the article did a fancy-pants dance around the likelihood that Hempstead (being on Long Island, as it is) was named for its function after all. Nobody remembers the Age of Sail anymore... *sigh*

And what are the chances that li'l Terrell was innocent of his shirt's connotations away down in Jawja? I think we should take a collection and send him an official "Weed Eater" lawn products T-shirt. And a Kellogg's "Special K" shirt to boot. And maybe an "STP" fuel additive shirt, although they might think he's going NASCAR on 'em with that one.

I wonder if Cheesequake, NJ has a town T-shirt...
