A Determination.
Dec. 20th, 2005 10:46 amSo, there was this exhibit at the Met that Beth and I were dying to see. And the fall was busy with house buying and moving and stuff, and then the holidays were imminent, and it closes on Jan. 3; so we got up at the asscrack of dawn Sunday morning (because she had to work in the afternoon) and went to see it. And it was Good, even if it meant that I got up at asscrack of dawn both days in the weekend, which is really, really wrong.
The bus ride gave me ample time to reflect on how often I miss things like this just from sheer lameitude and inability to herd enough cats in the right direction, whereupon I reached my determination, to wit:
Starting probably next month, presuming I have reached a comfortably-unpacked state, I am going to take one day each month--likely a Sunday, since they're otherwise generally useless--and Do Something in the city. Now, I've made such determinations before, and they came to nothing. The difference being that I am not going to attempt the herding of cats. I shall say, here and in email: "I am doing [foo] on Sunday the Xth. I am starting at [bar] at N:NNam, and intend to finish at [baz] at approximately N:NNpm. Let me know if you intend to meet me at the start, or text/phone if you find you'll be joining mid-stream." I will not negotiate, I will not rearrange, THIS IS WHAT I AM DOING and if you want to come I'll be happy to see you.
The general parameters of the exercise are low-cost to free explorations of the City and its wonders. Some will be things I've wanted to do that I haven't done (like Ellis Island, or wandering around the Battery, or an architectural walk through the Village); others will be revisiting old friends (the Columbia area, the museums, Central Park). If you think you might be interested, watch this space for announcements, or drop me a line & I will add you to the List To Be Mailed when I am planning an outing. I will give ear to suggestions for destinations, but I make absolutely no promise that I will use them.
