Doing Stuff #4: AMNH/Hayden Planetarium
Dec. 5th, 2006 01:41 pmEdit: It goes so much better when I include a DATE. Which is this Sunday, the 10th.
After long hiatus, the Going Out & Doing Stuff series resumes with a trip to the American Museum of Natural History and its associated outer-space building, the Rose Center for Earth and Space, Featuring The New Hayden Planetarium. My favorites here include the gem room, the Hall of Meteorites, all the old habitat dioramas that date back to like 1910 or some such, and all of the shiny new astronomy foo (especially since, when I first moved here, the planetarium exhibits didn't look like they'd been touched since the mid-Sixties). For the eight-year-old boys in the audience (hello,
audiovile), there is the hall of dinosaur skeletons. Also, there is an exhibit on gold. MAD BLING, YO.
I intend to catch the 9am bus (I'd drive in, but parking on the UWS? I Think Not) and arrive at the museum c. 10am, where I shall wander around Teddy Roosevelt's dioramas until all are gathered or 10:30, and then we will plan the attack. I anticipate this to be a long day with a lot of standing/walking, because I enjoy so very much of the museum, so plan your intentions accordingly. (The museum closes at 5:45.) Afterwards, a traditional Unoing at the Pizzeria Uno across the street (which is the CUGC ancestral hang-out) is called for, and maybe if we leave the museum early enough we can drop by Maxilla & Mandible.
Per usual, please comment here or send me email if you intend to join me for any or all of this adventure, and at what point (roughly) you intend to meet up. Also, note that, although you'll see signs all over talking about $14 admission, this is (like many museums) the "suggested" admission. You can pay as much or as little as your wallet can bear. (IMAX movies, the space show, and other special stuff is the listed price.)
