...now that our committed-to-education-and-democracy Congress has voted to gut all federal spending for the Center for Public Broadcasting:

Chicago Tribune article

It is noted in both of those, I think, that those responsible are actually going far far over the cuts that the White House asked for. Which sort of lends credence to my belief that the most horrific trends coming out of our government do not actually stem from our Inarticulate-in-Chief. He's no prize, not by a long chalk, but I'm well convinced there are a lot worse creatures than him swimming in the administration depths, and the real problem is that he lacks either the ability or the interest (or both) to rein those in. I don't know if that's better or worse, in an absolute sense, but it's very, very creepy.

Well, of course. Ever since Reagan, the prez candidate has been a spokesmodel. His job is to say the right things so as to keep 50.1% of the people from getting mad enough to matter, while the players run things.

Okay, to back off on the cynicism here a bit... (Watching C-SPAN is bad for one's health) between Tom "making homosexuality legal will doom us to extinction" DeLay, Bill "the powerful must be protected from the powerless" Frist, Tom "that's an awful nice courthouse there, hate to see anything bad happen to it" DeLay, Rick "Santorum" Santorum, and the whole propaganda machine that pushed 97% of new judge nominees through and then held a gun to the system of checks and balances for the other 3%, including the latest judge who appears to be (no shit) an honest-to-pete frothing Randroid...

...I'd say you have a point.

Yeah. I mean, I know that worrying about NPR in the middle of everything else seems kind of like "OMG my rug is smelly now" when your house has just been completely inundated by the Mississippi, but it also gives me the uncomfortable feeling that the Creepshow are confident/successful enough in the big matters that they're taking time to dismemeber the smaller victims.
