Snarfed from a Salon article about the current tribulations of Kate Moss:

What this drama has done is lay bare the ugly skeleton that holds up a fashion industry that for some time has prized hollow cheeks and vacant eyes, stunted, prepubescent frames, and jutting collar bones from which fabric drapes beautifully. In other words, the body that is appealing to designers -- and thus to consumers -- is a body that looks like it has been ravaged by drugs. In order to stay employed, models must maintain this shape; to maintain the shape they must do something besides eat right and exercise regularly. Whether it's cocaine or speed or heroin or caffeine or cigarettes or anorexia or bulimia or some combination of the above, most adult women cannot get bodies that look like Moss' healthily, because hers is not a healthy body.

Fuckin' A, Bubba.

We can only hope that this, like the Dove ads, is another sign of a turning tide back to an admittance that women are not vertical lines from neck to knee.

I look at the Dove ads, and my first reaction is, "Wait, I thought they said there were heavy women in these things?" Seriously...the biggest of that lot is still pretty trim. Which, I expect, says a lot more about the fashion industry. Especially when I saw interviews with modeling agency reps who claimed that such fatties would never become a trend.

(Aside: the black woman in the Dove ads may be clearly not of supermodel body type, but she is HAWT. Damn.)

Oh, sure; it's not by any means a return to perspective. But it's a step in the right direction, which is more than there's been in many a year.

Yay! I've never understood the whole "twiggy mentality"...

I mean, I'm gay. But if I were str8, I'd think that I'd want a woman who had a shape other than "stick"? Y'know?

Just like I prefer my guys to be guys.. not body-shaving, collagen-injecting, etc.

Because I don't dig comment spam from unknown people?

Feel free to make one cogent comment, not three separate entries of one sentence each.

Personally, I hated the Dove Ads, but I'm not exactly their target audience and all I can hope for Kate is that this blows over sooner rather later. She's being punished because she was caught, not because she does coke- she has forever and has always been beautiful and professional.

Oh, that was definitely a good part of the article's point--the fact that Kate Moss being hung out to dry is a stunning display of hypocrisy from the entire fashion industry. That their whole sanctimonious "I am shocked, shocked! that one of our models might be using drugs" is, well, about as believable as when the line was used in Casablanca.

I just ganked the bit that had some personal relevance, see.
