"No, that's MY cheesecake recipe!!"

So, some years agone,
richwillpowers passed on to me a (booze-enabled) eggnog recipe he'd gotten from I know not where (its origin appears to be a hotel in Duluth). I've made this at many an Xmas party to wild acclaim, and I confess I myself am very fond of it, eggnog hater though I am. It's just that darn good.
Much more recently, someone left a collection of Damon Runyon's short stories lying around work, which of course I read through about fifty-eleven times. In one of those stories, "Dancing Dan's Christmas", the narrator and several acquaintances make exceedingly merry on a holiday drink called a Tom & Jerry. There's no indication of what this actually is, except that it's really darn good and it's served hot and they have to use rye in it instead of rum, because rye is easier to come by during Prohibition.
And so to tonight, when as a soother to my jangling nerves and a bit of avoidance behavior I am reading through the bartending guide
tactisle gave me on long-term loan some while back, where I happen across the recipe for Tom & Jerry...
...and it's Rich's eggnog recipe.
Seriously.
You separate a shitload of eggs, beat each portion up with sugar and holiday spices, fold them back together, and add rum & hot milk.
Who knew?
[To the O RLY? people: there is also a drink called an "Orly Bird". Aheheheh.]
