I feel like I should be able to cope with multiple immediate, attention-demanding responsibilities with grace and suavity, instead of my usual descent into gibbering and shrieking. I mean, I usually get it all sorted, which certainly counts for something; but it shouldn't be at the cost of my coherence & civility.

This is, of course, one of those things which appears really clear-cut and easily attainable when you're thinking about it after the fact.

Gibbering and shrieking! Hee hee! That phrasing struck me as funny. You say it like it's a BAD thing; I would enjoy trying to apply this to more aspects of my life. To whit:

[Scene: Fancy Restaurant]

WAITER: Sir, I am afraid we are out of the Filet Mignon this evening. May I interest you in the Aged Prime Rib? It is excellent, and has won many awards from Steak Magazine.

ME: BIBBLE! BIBBLE BIBBLE! BUGGY BUGGY BUGGY BUGGY BUGGY! EEEEEEEEK! EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK!

WAITER: Sir, please calm down, it's--

ME: EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK! AIAIAIAIAIAI!!! EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK!

WAITER: I'm sorry sir! I'm so sorry! We'll get you a filet mignon right away if you'll just calm down!

ME: Thank you.

The trick is to gibber and shriek in private, or at least offstage, and then be coherent and civil in front of the audience.

I'm not saying I've attainted this goal, mind, nor even approach it.
