After lying around last night with my hand stapled to my forehead and accomplishing absolutely nothing (other than quality time with Mage and a book), I was somewhat disgusted with self. Therefore, forced myself this evening...eventually...to do some hand-sewing. I've now finished the shoulder wings for [livejournal.com profile] elibalin's doublet and just need to attach them to the garment.

Still remaining to do:
- acquisition and attaching of buttons
- buttonholes (KIIIIILL MEEEEEE)
- making & attaching the tabs along the waist
- adding trim

Need to decide if I should bind the CF edges with ribbon or similar. It was frequently done that way, but I don't think it's actually necessary. OTOH, it'll ensure that the lining isn't visible.

I'd like to make a shirt, but I don't have the right linen at the mo' *and* I've never done a late-period shirt before, and I'm very sure I won't be able to finish that and this in a month.

Today's sewing was brought to you by the One True Version of "The Scarlet Pimpernel". Which we have two different DVD editions of, both put out by cheap-ass no-name studios, both of which are worse than the videotape edition. Snarl.

Also snarl: I'm forging my way through the dense thicket of The One True Work On 14th-Century Costume, and I have a few notes for the author. At the top of my memorandum is "Most of us don't speak langue d'oil, so including contextual reference in it without translation is NOT FUCKING HELPFUL; and even those of us who took Latin are not going to sit there with a glossary puzzling out every reference, so same damn thing".

... Final snarl. Steve has just come in to tell me that one of the cats has just reacted to Miss Kitten by peeing on the bed. Goddammit. I suppose it's a miracle it took them this long to object.

My first thought on reading the bit about cat pee was "oh, your cats don't like ex-strippers-turned-musical-artistes, eh?"

And then I realised that she spells it "Kittin".

By hand. Um. You are clearly insane. Not that that's a bad thing.

(Meanwhile, I continue to have not motivated myself to fix the damn pocket in my grey Shorts Of Holding, but at this point it can wait until next summer.)

It's actually easier to do them by hand than by machine. No lie.

No way! *grin* I hate hate hate sewing by hand, and will go to extr33m lengths to avoid it.

The trick to doing them by machine is not to cut the hole until you've finished the stitching. Come to think of it, that might be the trick to doing them by hand too. Hmm...

Trick, heck; that's the ONLY way to do them. Otherwise you go MAD, MAD I TELL YOU. And they lock you up and you don't have to sew any more.

I believe I find hand-sewing them easier because I have a finer control over my needle that way.

The lady speaks the truth. I've never gotten one done on the machine that looks right!

I did one or two on a machine in middle school. I remember that there were lots and lots of stitches very close together.

(Oh, the subject? This. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Langues_d'oïl#Influence) I didn't know, or maybe knew and forgot, that French had so many weird relatives, let alone ones live enough for transit signage.)
