hot! lesbian! street! action!

I had lunch with Beth today, as I often have since being grounded; and she walked me back to the corner where I turn east down 29th, as she often does. And we hugged farewell, as we always do.
The part that makes this different from all other lunches is the guy walking past as we embraced who said loudly, "Homosexuals! I see you! Mutants!" And then he kept yelling "MUTANTS!" as Beth said "Hot girl-on-girl action!" and I replied "Yeah, doesn't he just wish?"
I'm immensely amused by this, but also somewhat puzzled: a guy walking on Seventh Ave. in Chelsea, past the Fashion Institute of Technology no less, and a platonic hug sets off his gaydar? o_O
