(I meant to post this some days ago, but, y'know, stuff.)

If you go to it expecting A Bond Film (and such is your kink), you'll probably be pretty pleased. As Bond Films[tm] go, it's certainly better than anything that's been churned out in years and possibly even decades. If you go having been given glowing pictures about how this is so much more realistic AND so much more true to Fleming's books, you will be a moderately disgusted panda.

I leave it to you, Gentle Reader, to ascertain which category I fall into.

For either category of viewer: Daniel Craig does a pretty good Bond, golden locks notwithstanding, and I like that he brings a harder, nastier edge to the table. (I could do without his over-emo character arc, but eh.) I would also like to give particular notice to Sebastien Foucan, who plays the bomb-maker that Bond chases around during the first action sequence. The man moves like nothing I've ever seen that wasn't CGI, and frankly, I'd pay $10 just to watch him do his shit. [livejournal.com profile] sweh did some digging and found that he is the co-founder of a discipline called Parkour, and all I've got to say is, I'd back them against ninjas any day. Private to Busiek-era Avengers fans: This guy is totally my pick to play Triathlon.

There are some totally wild free-running videos out there on Google Video and YouTube. Pretty freaky stuff. :)

Having just reread the book... the emo scenes from the film are actually very very close to it! I'd say 60% of the book was Bond emo and I'd guestimate 25% or more of the book was emo Bond recoverying from torture and falling in love with the girl.

And the remaining 15% was Baccarat! And hiding money behind hotel door number plates.

I'd guess... first 33% was getting the players into position with Bond emo'ing about life in general. Next 17% was Baccarat (with Bond emo'ing about losing everything then being rescued by Felix). Then about 25% was the chase and torture scene, then the final 25% was Bond in recovery and falling in love with the girl and hating his job and being generally emo, ending with a few pages of the girl killing herself (more Bond emo) and finally Bond throwing off his emo side and become a hard hearted bastard.

Seriously!

could do without his over-emo

Dear Internet: how long has that word existed in its current sense? 'Cause it seems like it's pretty recent, and I'd like to be able to tell anyone using it to get off my notational lawn.

As a musical genre, mid or late 80s I think.

As in "Whiny emo kids", a lot more recently. Late 90s at the earliest? Sure as hell wasn't hearing it in college, which'd be the obvious vector. So, within a decade, and I'd put money on "well within".
