So this is when you get out the reasonably identical backup hardware, which you may not actually have, and get the old config file from RANCID[*] in the center of all things down in the colo that you can't get to because the switch is dead, if it was even being polled in the first place. And then there'd be, oh, two dozen cables to unplug and replug.

Indeed, that's not wholly dissimilar to what Mr. Networks did. (In which it is also discovered that part of the reason for my xterm's occasional random hangs may have been the extreme dodginess of the cable from byzantium to the Summit.)
