As of Oct. 1, I will be starting work at Hunter College, as a "Computer Services Manager, Level 2". (Civil service titles are very unsexy. But the benefits are awe-inspiring.) Have just sent my sorrowful letter of farewell to the internal staff mailing list.

Although I've been coming to grips with this thought for a while now, I still have a certain degree of ZOMG.

and after 90 days, you cannot get fired.

my wife knows people who have been convicted of embezzlement who still have jobs with the state. They just are not allowed to touch money any more.

Hey Techie Girl...I'm hoping to revert my dvd-burner to it's oringal firmware...I've found this passage about it on the how to flash it (which I did in the start):
One reader that posted a past report in the drive db here sent a note he used the same instructions on his 117 drive and the updater hung during the flash. After a long wait he finally reset the computer and ended up with an unusable drive (reported as a 108 but not a complete flash). He used a PC and dos util to restore the drive, but sent note asking to emphasize there is some risk involved

Know anything about dos utils I can use for this?

Regrettably not--I don't do much with hardware, and I've never screwed around with optical drives beyond just installing them. I'll ask around, though.
