Apparently in this our 21st century global wossname, I can't use my laptop to entertain me on my 26 hours in transit, because cattle class still has no power outlets.

Maybe four hours, if one is doing very little.

and it takes your four hours to get home?

So...use it in the morning to work, charge it at work, use it on the train going home, charge it going home. LRR

"26 hours in transit" was somehow unclear?

This is where a hand-cranked "computers for third world kids" laptop would come in handy.

It gets better. See also the TSA's new battery restrictions (http://safetravel.dot.gov/whats_new_batteries.html), which shouldn't affect anyone not carrying professional-grade photo/AV gear, but just in case you were having crazy thoughts about buying a zillion spare batteries for the flight.

Book? Magazine? Sudoku? I could send you Josh's Game Boy if it'd help, but you'd have to play Tony Hawk and Mario.
Geeze...some people get to take dream trips and all they can do is complain about the amenities. *grin*

My brilliant idea was that I could download most of Wikisource to said laptop, so I only would have to carry the laptop, as opposed to A Large Stack Of Dead Trees. (And as bonus, play Nethack on it.)

However: Not Mine.

I think it's going to be knitting and MP3 player instead.

Get an e-paper based ebook reader? That should last :-)

You can't use it anyway because the person in front of you has pushed their seat back to sleep, so your laptop won't fit on the table with its screen open.

Trust me on this. I no longer use my laptop on long flights unless the seat next to me is free, in which case you can kind of do a twisty weird thing with the table next to you.

I usually carry a spare battery just in case I get lucky, which means I've got 2x4hr. What with sleeping, meals, and at least one crappy movie (and sometimes as many as 3), that fills the time pretty well. If you haven't booked a ticket yet, I recommend Air New Zealand because they have seatback entertainment units so you can pick your own movies/TV/etc.

Have already booked American/Qantas, but the aircraft in question seems to have individual seatback things, so that's okay.

(Lordy, I really would like to see how business travellers live someday.)

How about mileage upgrades (for next time)? I use Amex for everything (including gas & groceries) and before you know it I've got huge amounts of mileage. I'm using it for my Italy tickets. I had enough mileage for business class, but alas it was sold out. :(

Business class is lovely and First class even better. I like the part where the tray disappears as soon as you've finished with it. And the seats are wonderfully huge for us short folks. (I often got free upgrades when I was a travel agent.)

How about reading a book and chatting w/ your hubby? Maybe they will show a bad movie for you to watch.
