I have banished the Paperwork Shoggoth, and created a pile of shreddings that is roughly as large as me. (Seriously.) The desk is clean, except for a small tray of things I am keeping for reference. Everything has its (labelled) folder in the filing cabinet. This took me about six hours, all told.

Minor fail: I can't use my laptop at the desk, because it can't get wireless. (Which is odd, since one can get it just fine from the TV room, a few steps away.) Edit: [livejournal.com profile] sweh can get signal just fine from the same location with his Eeeeeeee so I don't know what the hell is going on.

Too tired to post more, or more creatively, at this time.

Hey, congratulations. Speaking as someone who got into Getting Things Done a while back, it's a big step, and I found it really useful for clearing out a bunch of psychic debris and making me feel like I'm actually on top of my life. It's amazing how much stress reduction there is in just taking care of things right away instead of letting them sit.

I'm wondering if the router might be playing up. 1/2 hour after getting a good signal I tried again and for some reason the machine was failing to negotiate WPA with the router. I could see it associating but within 20 seconds or so the connection would drop, before DHCP negotiation had been achieved.

This _could_ explain what you were seeing with your Mac, as well. Suggest rebooting the router and trying again!

Congratulations.

I was also having Bad IEEE 80211x weather yesterday (although it's always pretty stormy here - see:

where my MacBook Pro couldn't associate with my own router without a reboot of the router, and [livejournal.com profile] wildemoose's PowerBook was on but getting Hayes Smartmodem 1200 speeds. Seems to be happy today...

If it doesn't find any networks when the wireless is searching for a friend, does that mean it's not likely to be interference at fault? Or could there be enough smog in the air (to really torture this analogy) to cause interference without actually being enough to connect to?

Yes, it could mean the antenna has come off the card. Have you subjected it to any Unorthodox Kinetic Behavior recently?

Shove iStumbler (http://www.istumbler.net/) on it over Ethernet then spark it up and see what the signal strengths are?
