(This post actually covers yesterday's endeavors. Please adjust your set accordingly.)

In which I discover that going down to the gym at 12 sharp, when Open Time begins, is suboptimal because everyone else does it too and therefore you may have to wait for a treadmill. Happily, I didn't have to wait too long. I did the same routine from last week. I realize that even though it's still really (if variably) hard mentally (or emotionally, perhaps; something like that), if I look past the Wah and Ugh and I Can't, I'm actually holding up better to it physically. Still overheated at the end, but not as completely flat.

Then did a bit of weights to finish up:
Modified shoulder press: 2 sets of 10 reps at 2#
Assisted dip: 2 sets of 10 reps, at 155# <-- that was super hard.

Was up half a pound, no big deal. I don't know about today, because I was at [livejournal.com profile] sweh's and his scale has always been quite different from mine.

Today I'm slated for the Yoga class they offer. I'm kind of ambivalent. I am feeling a strong urge to exercise in a much more energetic way, but on the other hand, the stretchy and meditative-ness of yoga is probably something I could really use right about now.

Yoga can be very energetic, and on any day, the practice can be tailored to your needs at the time. So, for example, if the teacher says to do a downward dog and hold it for 5 breaths, but you want something more challenging, it shouldn't be a problem to do a vinyasa of downward dog-plank-chataranga-cobra-downward dog in that same period of time. A few of those are definitely energetic. I swear, those f***in' hippies look like wimps, but yoga is tough. :)

  1. Don't be afraid of going up by a few pounds. You build dense, meaty muscle faster than you shed fat, so as you train, you'll first go down a lot as you sweat off water, then down more as the fat starts to be metabolized, and then up as the muscle mass increases. Then it starts to go down again, and the bonus is, it goes faster, because all those new muscle cells have lots and lots of mitochondria that need to be supplied with ATP. So your average basal metabolic rate (the energy you need just to sit still and read blogs) goes up, causing TEH WEIGHT LOSS YAY LOLZ 11.

  2. Everyone who trains hates the first ten minutes. IME the more you train, the nastier the first ten are. But after that you warm up and shortly you won't want to actually stop. Da Troof.

Running is horrible. As a lifelong cyclist, I couldn't recommend it.

It was cycling all my teen years that gave me leg muscles that can crack coconuts, and therefore bar me from having nice boots. Do Not Want.

No, dear, that was genetics. Me has them, too.

One *can* has nice boots, it's just more of a challenge to find ones that work.

It really depends on your yoga. Ashtanga and other yogas I've done are IMHO really kick your ass hard at times and definitely not just stretching and meditation. Especially during sun salutations when your pulse is pounding in your ears and your arms are shaking or during ab work. I tend to have less OMG my legs are going to die, but that is fairly standard (unless we are talking about jogging).
