Just back from the emergency room. Steve was having chest pains, but of a different kind than his hiatal hernia, the usual culprit in these adventures. He has not in fact had a heart attack; OTOH, his blood pressure was registering at 175 over 105. OTTH, the kindly doctor noted that usually people are horrendously stressed by the time they're getting their BP taken at the emergency room, so it should not necessarily be taken as a sign of imminent doom. In sum, possible causes for the mystery pain include: high blood pressure; a new flavor of gastrointestinal fun; or he's pulled a chest muscle of some kind. He will be calling his regular doctor tomorrow to get checked out.

What doesn't kill you only makes you stronger?

He's demonstrating learning behaviors?

He really is as fragile as he always acted?

Sure you don't want to come to the Pierpont Morgan lecture on imagery and dress tomorrow?

How's your blood pressure doing?

Husband. [livejournal.com profile] sweh is not generally prone to such frailties of the flesh. :)

Oy. Hope it proves to be not too serious.

Oy, indeed. Tell him I hope he feels better.

Panic attack, possibly?

There are also nerves that can get pinched around the chest area. It can hurt like hell and just be caused by a coughing or sneezing bout....

The important thing is that it's being looked at by professionals. In this case, best that he is being attentive to his symptoms and not one of those guys who'd blow it off as something irrelevant, while it turns into something serious. Even stress can be addressed if you know that's what it is. Hugs.

Well, it's not like he's under any stress or anything. I mean it's not like you're not already hitting some of life's top five stress causing events at the moment (http://littleshoolive.wordpress.com/2008/03/01/10-most-stressful-things-really/).

This is not the first time that he's had serious stress-related physical problems. Any chance he's considering seeing a therapist or someone else who could help him deal with all this stress?

I implored him to do so; he says that, like exercise, as long as he's working these horrendous hours he just can't fit it in. There's a cause and effect issue here.

and...don't those horrendous hours cause a lot of stress?

Indeed. Stop the world: we want to get off.

I'm convinced my current nasty cold hit because I was having nightmare-inducing stress related to one of my classes.

Well, if he doesn't do something, he may wind up unable to work horrendous hours...or any hours, for that matter.

Therapists just increase the stress. Just have someone prescribe lorazepam or some other anxiolytic and his life will be a lot better. Dark chocolate also works, but has nasty side-effects.

I'm glad it wasn't a heart attack. The last time someone I know went to that hospital with chest pains, B's father ended up with a triple bypass. That was a lot (10?) of years ago, so the work done on him has held up well...
