Salad's not food. Vegetables and protein doesn't have to be 'salad'. I find you can get lots of Indian food that is pretty high-protein, low-carb.

Whole Foods has a Miso Ginger dip/dressing that I think is really great. And I agree with the comments above: you don't have to stick to rabbit food to cut out empty, carb-y calories.

Would it help to switch to cooked vegetables? I find them to be far more food-like than salads are.

Fresh veggies are good. However, there are good things in cooked veggies too. My thought was that if your calories in is lowish and you do exercise, then you will lose weight. Have you considered Weight Watchers? People I know have had good luck with that. The insanely low fat diet worked for me back in the day, but I'm just not willing to go that route again.
