We back now, yo, and for the most part unscathed (a few black-fly bites, upset tummies, and general exhaustion/debilitation). Here beginneth the epic.

The flight up was unexceptional, although it was on the Smallest Jet Ever. Stupidly I let Steve and Ross make the arrangements, so of course they didn't work out a place to meet, but only ended up wasting about half an hour before we got on the road. Unfortunately, world + dog was also heading north on the 401 to their cabins; traffic was very heavy, and I mean NYC heavy. We stopped in Kinmount for potty break and ice cream, and I had the first sugar I'd taken since my birthday party. Nothing has ever tasted that fine, let me tell you. With one thing and another, we got to the cabin probably around 7pm.

So, the Cohens' cabin. It's not actually in Algonquin Provincial Park; it's a little bit south. The land around several small lakes was purchased by some group back in the 70s, and they set up plots so that there are cabins around the lakes (each with space for a small dock on the lake) and sold them. I presume there are some building rules, but the result seems to be both more pleasing and less annoying than Radburn. The cabins (well, some are true houses, really) are all almost invisible from the lake itself; you can see the some lights twinkling through the trees, but no more.

It is, quite simply, paradise on Earth.

I can't think of any better way to spend a summer than getting up to the sound of loons crying on the lake, walking down to my dock, and taking the canoe out for an early-morning paddle around the lake. (Or canoeing up to the store for eggs & milk, etc.) I confess I might have a different opinion during black-fly season--I have only two bites, and that was plenty. I also might not have had so light a heart if I'd realized there were ticks (we didn't encounter any while there, but on the drive home we discovered a whole bunch glommed on to Ross's car). But, as it was, I was supremely happy.

The game did not go so well as pooky had hoped, for various and sundry reasons. But, he should have things well in hand for the Xmas session.

On Monday, we cleaned up the cabin and Ross drove us south to Toronto. This took a lot longer than expected, not because traffic was bad (it wasn't), but because we must needs detour to Alliston to visit Steve's uncle and aunt. This we did, and had lunch with them, and all was very nice, but it meant we didn't reach the hotel 'til 7:15...and the K-W BOFHs were meeting us at 7:30. Weeee!

Tired now. More later.
