I took El Scuzz up to the vet. The very nice, somewhat incongruous doctor (think "Northern Exposure", except in the ghetto instead of Alaska) said that at least the bladder is empty--so that means no blockages, which lead to All Kinds of Bad Things--but on the down side, that means he can't get a urine sample to see if there are, e.g., uric crystals building up. Best guess is a UTI, so the fuzzbutt has gotten a whopping antibiotic shot, and an oral antibiotic to be given 2x daily. This somewhat curtails my weekend options, but I think I can make shift.

Also, I have mo' better flea remedies. PSA: Hartz Plus is apparently an inferior product that doesn't pack as much punch as Frontline or some of the others.

I should like to get some cleaning done today, but it's one of those unpleasantly lowering, humid sort of days where nothing ever dries and nothing feels clean after you've cleaned it. [livejournal.com profile] nedlnthred told me I ought to just relax and take it easy for a change, but there's just so much to do...

Mr. Scuzzy is exhibiting the same initial symptom as Tux was, namely the constant runnings to the catbox with little result. The Internets tell me that either he's constipated, which is easily fixed by OTC medications, or that he has some kind of urinary tract issue, which is an OMG VET sort of problem. Based on last weekend, I'm inclined to put my money on #2, and thus [livejournal.com profile] nedlnthred is kindly delaying her weekend departure for an hour so we can run him up to the vet.

Instead of trying to use mutt commands in OS X Mail, as had been the case, I'm find I'm now trying to use OS X Mail commands in mutt.

Work is absolutely, gibberingly crazed. (First week of school + last days of registration period = MADNESS.) More later, I hope, maybe.

It's been a long day, and part of a longer week. I was supposed to go up to the house to pack more STUF, but neither Steve nor I were up for it at all (he's been having wretched allergy attacks at night, and is badly sleep-deprived), so we postponed. Instead, I have come home, scritched kitties, had a drink while sitting on the porch & watching the sun set over the ghetto, and made dinner.

The dinner, thus: Based on a Nigella recipe, to wit "Lentils with Italian Sausage". Which we had no sausages, but rather a lot of kielbasa, so this is the Polish version. The flavors are good, but I wanted a more stewlike item, and the lentils are still a bit on the crunchy side. We have set half of it back on the stove with more liquid to see what happens. (Meantime, [livejournal.com profile] nedlnthred made cookies.)

And now is wine and Much Ado About Nothing, which is also comfort food. Lord, I love how Kenneth Branagh can carry off the lines! (Particularly compared to The Keanu {though his half-naked massage scene is pretty}.) (I love this movie, but the costumes are shit, even if you figure they're actually doing Shakespearean-age rather than the putative time period; oh well.) And also working on a core class project with Dr. Nick: hurray for Google Docs. I, for one, welcome, etc.

Tux, a.k.a. Fred, a righteous, cool, smart-ass cat about town, died while we were at work today. I knew he hadn't been feeling well this weekend and so I was going to take him to the vet tonight if he was still poorly. I waited too long.

My fault, my fault, my fault.

Last night, went down to get a Popsicle, realized it would be impossible to eat while playing CoH, and made a cocktail instead. This, in my head, is what passes for logic.

Take a double handful of very ripe raspberries, and about 10 mint leaves. Muddle the bejesus out of them with about 3/4 oz. white rum and a splash of simple syrup. When pulverized, strain into flute and fill up with the last of the bottle of Prosecco your housemate did not finish t'other night.

It's tasty, beautiful, and potent. JUST LIKE ME!

...

I'm not good at the self-affirmation. But it was a good drink.

I have been working like a very working thing today, incl. vacuuming the stairs and other esoterica. For a change, I stopped to begin dinner preparation before I reached Condition: KILL KILL KILL.

1) Main course: I took the three chix breasts that needed eating, and put them in a baking dish with some white wine. Meantime, sautee'd 3 garlic cloves, 2 small onions, and an orange pepper in olive oil. When it was right, I blopped it on top of the chicken and put it in the oven to bake at 375 'til done. I'm not sure this qualifies as "experimental", since I've done not dissimilar things before, but I was winging it all, so.

2) Side dish: The problem was that there was an awful lot of leftover ziti, that is, cooked but sauceless. I didn't want a tomato sauce with the above, so took butter, sliced many garlic awfully thin, and let it slowly cook (my Italian cookbook calls this "insaporire"), added salt and pepper, and then grated romano. (Canned, alas. You go to war with the cheese you have.) I let this cook on a low heat for a pretty long time, so that things got sort of crusty--not unlike the top of a really good mac'n'cheese.

3) Cookies: For the first time, I winged a baking recipe entirely. It's a basic drop cookie, using whole wheat flour, light brown sugar (I KNOW I bought dark, but I can't find it), and the tail end of a bunch of things that I wanted to use up before the flitty moths found them: dried cherries, pecans, & raisins chiefly. Also flavored with cinnamon, ginger, clove, and a tiny wee bit of secret spice. They're not bad, but not quite what I wanted.

Busy as a one-legged man in an ass-kicking contest. Work is full of the ulaeulaeulaeulaeulaeulae, but there is progress hidden in the madness; I hope to get a moment to post about that before it's entirely stale. [livejournal.com profile] elibalin and I went to the New York Classical Theatre tonight, which is to say we followed them around Central Park as they put on "Misalliance" by George Bernard Shaw. Most excellent, again, as was their show we saw last summer. And outdoors on a beautiful night, so what's not to like? Before that [livejournal.com profile] nedlnthred and I made a lightning raid on David Byrne's art installation Playing the Building, which is that he took the ancient Battery Maritime Building and rigged it so that when you play an antique miniature organ in the middle, you are playing the sounds of the building itself. It was about to close, which necessitated the haste... It was amazingly cool, and I'm most glad we went. Apparently the building (a glorious old Edwardian structure, royally trashed in the interim) is about to be turned into a luxury hotel. But supposedly they will be restoring what they can. That's something.

Rest of the week included great kindness from [livejournal.com profile] sedai, [livejournal.com profile] caelfinn, and Mr. caelfinn, who I shall be enjoying Burning Man vicariously through; dinner with [livejournal.com profile] cobrawoman and [livejournal.com profile] sweh at a fine, fine Greek place recommended by [livejournal.com profile] spride; a humblingly miserable clothes-shopping experience which I shall perhaps post about if I ever get two more seconds; and a Bryant Park Movie (at last!! and the last of the summer, at that) with [livejournal.com profile] elibalin followed by crashing at his place so that I could get a sense of how long it takes to commute from thence to Hunter. It's about the same as commuting from Beth's House for Wayward Women, and far far better than from Fair Lawn. And I do love what I've seen of the neighborhood, and I could maybe even afford a 2BR apartment there. It's just so friggin' far from [livejournal.com profile] sweh.

[livejournal.com profile] nedlnthred is off to the shore this weekend, and I might have gone (it looks like it will be glorious weather), but I'm feeling really dragged out and have opted to stay home. Generally of late I'm trying to live by the tenet "the only regrets are the things that you don't do" (hat tip to [livejournal.com profile] vikingtim), but the beach is not going anywhere, and I think I'll feel 10x better for puttering locally.

Canned oxygen for $16 a pop, on sale now at your local drugstore.

I think this has been proposed before, but it was, y'know, a joke.

...cos I am awfully tired.

Saturday: much errand running and whatnot, and then a Very Most Excellent Concert consisting of Motorhead, Black Sabbath, and Judas Priest. Hope to post about that separately.

Sunday: had a really good, really long (I ran from full charge down to dead-battery) phone convo with Mom; which I hadn't actually talked to her since the effluvium hit the whirlyblades, and so was long overdue. Then went ballistic with the mop and the bleach on the back bedroom that is currently housing the four cats formerly curated by [livejournal.com profile] dariodevil--we intend it to be the media room when it stops smelling of cat butt. (One of them, it's either Tux or Scuzzy, doesn't like the style of catbox currently in there and is pleased to do his business right in front of it. I think I've sorted that, but now there are hairballs.) Great strides were made, if at the cost of vast exhaustion. Also I realized I forgot the audio/visual cable for the PS2. Bah.

Monday: met [livejournal.com profile] sweh down t'pub and gibbered on his shoulder for awhile. Also he tried to explain radians to me. The diagrams he made in my notebook are incomprehensible to me sober.

Tonight: thought I would pick up Lurch from the mechanics, but it turns out he needs bigger magic that will take much longer, so went home for therapeutic baking--whereupon [livejournal.com profile] nedlnthred and I found that all the flour, and sundry other items, in her cabinets were infested with flitty moths. I marshaled a successful campaign to eradicate them from this particular region (nearly falling off the counter a few times, and both of us getting multiply mosquito-bit since the back door was open to help with the bleach smell), but it was a Pyrrhic victory with a lot of civilian casualties. Then, feeling this was more than sufficient effort at the end of what was a really wearing work day for each of us, we watched Part One of the A&E Scarlet Pimpernel, to which I can only say that the memory of Leslie Howard is in no way endangered.

Work: All of our hojillion senior-citizen students have been told Blatantly Wrong Things about the computery bits of registration. Helpdesk drama ensued. More about this another time, too, probably.

Unlike the other computers around the college, the machines dedicated to use in the larger lecture halls are (in theory) maintained by the AV people, not by the usual technicians. So therefore it's much harder for me to go and smack a bitch when I come back from a new student orientation and find that the lecture hall has attempted to pass my flash card a virus, as happens about 50% of the time. Or when, as happened today, the fucking equipment wasn't working at all.

"Hello, freshmen! I'm from the IT department and I'm here to tell you about all the wonderful services we provide with consummate professionalism! OH EXCEPT THE SHIT IN THIS ROOM WHICH IS BROKEN"

I really hate being made to look stupid. I desire to find someone to express my displeasure to, with a very large stick.

Oooo.

It's a beautiful, perfect Pennsic day out there. You guys have fun!

My cellphone is now like unto a brick. Sometime around 7:15 I'd guess: it endlessly tries to reboot itself without actually rebooting, even after taking the battery out &c.

I hope to resolve this sometime tomorrow.

MOAR! Now something in my machine is making a wretched noise. I think it's a fan. Fucking wonderful.

YAYZ!

Accounts Guy and I intend to set up, on the table in the corner, an espresso station. Because we are civilized.

[For those of you who lack context, dutiful son [livejournal.com profile] elibalin has been dragooned forth to help clean out his grandparents' house in Middle Bumfuck, PA. This...is his story.]

7/29, 6:31pm: My bus driver has no nose.
7/29, 11:10pm: No internets, uncle fell off wagon again and will not be here, ground floor of house is disaster area. Uaelaelaelaelaelae.
7/29, 11:13pm: Also, according to the kids' menu of the local diner, Batman is a plate of chicken fingers.

7/30, 9:15am: Cousin will not be here either. Entire cleanup job falls on me. Must do everything in two days to avoid coming out here next weekend. Motivated by rage.
7/30, 9:20am: Oh, also? When phone service was reactivated here, for the duration of this mess, it came with DSL, but the router got shipped to one of the nursing homes.
7/30, 11:12am: TOO MUCH STUFF
7/30, 11:31am: Found: sad clown needlepoint.
7/30, 2:59pm: I have just filled a crate with ceramic owls.
7/30, 4:35pm: I cannot express how awful a time I'm having.

[livejournal.com profile] sweh, [livejournal.com profile] arkham1010, [livejournal.com profile] audiovile, and your humble correspondent are sitting at an outdoor table at a pub on Greenwich Ave. (that bit is important, folks), having a pleasant drink and a chat, when we overhear the two fellows at the table opposite ask the bartender...where to find Greenwich Village.

I brought the wrong cellphone charger, and now my cell is dead 'til tomorrow or Wednesday.

Have ransacked fridge for leftovers, which I am now having for dinner, a fair bit past my bedtime. I am given to understand I have now achieved the Zen of Singlehood.

They are nice leftovers...

Also, [livejournal.com profile] nedlnthred's giant antique cast-iron footed tub is a thing of beauty and made for lolling.
